Nursery Weekly Update 27th February 2015

Our Learning this Week

This week in Nursery we have been celebrating all things Welsh.

We have been practising our Welsh animal names for our Eisteddfod song.

We have looked at a painting by Welsh artist Ivor Davies called “Sky”. We created our own version of the painting by mixing glas (blue) and gwin (white) paints to make a blue sky and then we cut out white clouds to stick onto our sky. The results were beautiful.

We have looked at the Welsh emblems such as daffodils, leeks, and the Welsh flag.
We did observational drawings of the daffodil and we did mark making with leeks with was multi-sensory because the leeks had a very strong smell!

We listened to a Welsh folk tale about how the Draig Coch came to be on the Welsh flag. We then coloured our own flag.

We did an emblem hunt in the sand and found lots of pictures of daffodils, leeks, rugby balls and Welsh flags and when we had found them we counted how many we collected.

We also watched some traditional Welsh dancing in the interactive whiteboard and then had a go at some of the moves with a partner. I saw some fantastic dancing.

We finished the week with our Eisteddfod celebration
Dydd Gwŷl Dewi Sant hapus

Why not celebrate St.Davids Day at the free family event at The National Waterfront Museum – all free and always lots of fun!

Nursery Weekly Update 13th February 2015

Our Learning this Week

Language, Literacy and Communication

This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “p”. We read the story “The Three Little Pigs”.

Betty didn’t know the story so the children tried to recall different parts of the story for each character. We had some really good story telling words.
Our Write Dance had us practising circles, dots and curved lines.

Mathematical Development

We explored ways of making 10 with two Numicon shapes to fit inside the three pigs’ house.

We made patterns copying the Numicon pattern cards.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We explored different materials to make large houses outside for the pigs. We collected dry grass, big and small sticks, and rocks to make the three houses.

Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.

We asked the children “Who did you like playing with today?” and encouraged children to tell others what and who they played with.

Creative Development

We painted pink pigs and made some beautiful pasta heart bracelets and necklaces for valentine’s day.

We used special paper to design a new house for the pigs. When our drawing was done we chose what construction set we needed to build it.

Physical Development

We used the balls in the hall to practise different ways of passing to each other. We rolled, threw and caught the ball.

We moved our bodies to Write Dance “Pat-A-Cake”.

We played a parachute game where we had to listen to our names and then swap places with a friend.

Welsh Language Development

We have been practising the Welsh animal song in preparation for the Eisteddfod.

We read “Picnic” and learnt some new words such as brechdannau – sandwiches and sudd oren – orange juice.
We have continued using Rhodri “Mae h’in amser….” signs to tell us when there is a change in routine.

                      Anything else…

Have a great half term.

We look forward to hearing what you have all been up to when we see you back at school on Monday 23rd February.

Our Learning this Week

Nursery 6th February 2015

Language, Literacy and Communication

This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “o”. We read the story “Jolly Olly Octopus”.

We talked about what made Jolly Olly laugh and smile. The children had to then tell me something that made them laugh or smile.

Mathematical Development

We made our own counting octopus, making sure it had 8 tentacles.
Each tentacle had a number and we had to count the correct number of stickers for each tentacle. The octopus is also great to practice counting at home.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We explored oranges in a variety of ways.
We made freshly squeezed orange juice and the children had to explain how they made it and express whether they liked it or not.
We also took oranges outside and made ramps to roll them down. We added tubes to the bottom of the ramp to see if the orange would roll through it. Lots of fun!

Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.

We had a go at giving praise to our friends for the work they showed the class. We clapped, gave thumbs up and used comments to let children know that we were proud of what they had done.

Creative Development

We printed with oranges using orange paint.
When this was dry we explored using different tools – crayon, pens, and pastels – to make “o” shapes to decorate the printing. We made some lovely works of art.

Physical Development

We moved in different ways across an obstacle course in the hall. We climbed on, jumped off, balanced, slid, and climbed through.
We had a game of Simon Says, and we used our bodies to make circle shapes with Penpals.

Welsh Language Development

We have been practising the Welsh animal song in preparation for the Eisteddfod.
We have also been using Rhodri “Mae h’in amser….” signs to tell us when there is a change in routine.

                      Anything else…

Have a good weekend.

Our learning this week – 29th January 2015

Language, Literacy and Communication

This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “n”. We read the story “Spike’s Best Nest”.

We had a visit from a bird called Tweety who left us a letter to say his nest had blown away in the wind. The children wrote letters back to Tweety to say how they were going to help him.
We did the “Merry Go Round” dance in Write Dance and had to make circular movements with our bodies. .

Mathematical Development

We explored the Numicon shapes in lots of creative ways this week. We pressed the Numicon into playdough and we printed with the Numicon shapes.

We also went number fishing and tried hard to recognise which number was on the fish. We sang “1,2,3,4,5, once I caught a fish alive”

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We watched a video of a robin building a nest. We talked about what he had used to build a nest. We then used twigs, leaves and grass to make a new nest for Tweety. He even sent us a video message saying thank you and telling us how much he liked the nests we had made for him. Hopefully Tweety will visit us again soon.

Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.

We talked about how Spike was feeling in the story “Spike’s Best Nest”. He was grumpy, tired, sad and then happy, which gave us lots to talk about.

Creative Development

We drew a nest and some children even included eggs.

We made a newspaper collage of a letter “n”.

Physical Development

We did the “Straight, Bent, Cross, Happy” dance in Write Dance and had to make contrasting movements with our bodies to match the music.

Welsh Language Development

As well as our daily Welsh board, we have been practicing our Welsh numbers with lots of number rhymes. Encourage your child to count in Welsh at home.

                      Anything else…

Don’t forget, school inset day on Friday 30th January.

See you on Monday.

Have a good weekend.

This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “m”. We read the story “Monkey Puzzle” and looked in the book to try and find all the ”m”’s
We did the “Merry Go Round” dance in Write Dance and had to make circular movements with our bodies. .

Mathematical Development

We played with money this week. We put our hand in the lucky dip and whatever coin we got, we put it into the correct purse by matching.

We have been singing along and dancing to 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed and % Little Monkeys Swinging from the Tree.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We had some lost animal babies who needed us to find their mummy. It was a bit tricky because the baby animal names are different to the mummy animal names and they don’t always look the same.

Our learning this week – 16th January 2015

Language, Literacy and Communication

This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “l”. We read the story “What the Ladybird Heard” and used small world figures and Puppet Pals on the iPad to retell the story. The children also thought about ways to stop the robbers stealing the cow.
We had a go at making different lines and writing the letter l in trays of lentils.

Mathematical Development

We played a ladybird matching game on the interactive whiteboard where we had to count the spots on the ladybird and match it to the number on the leaf.

We also explored how a mirror can make half a ladybird into a whole ladybird.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

When it was dry enough to play outside the children had fun exploring the big puddles in our nursery play area. Some children decided to float boats in the puddle and then other children collected other toys to try and float in the puddle. Some floated and other just sunk to the ground…good investigating!

Our Learning this Week

Nursery 12th December 2014

We have been very busy preparing for our Christmas concert this week. The children have been amazing and looked fantastic in their outfits so thank you for all your effort supporting your children with this.

We have been reading the Nativity story this week and playing with the Nativity characters. The children enjoyed the story and liked hearing about Baby Jesus.

Sparkle the Elf has been helping us do our best singing this week as well as getting in a tangle with our Christmas decorations!! I wonder what mischief and fun he will have for us next week?

I have a list of children’s names if you would like your child to send Christmas cards – please ask for a list if you need one.

A few reminders for next week:

Nursery will be having our Christmas party on Thursday 18th December. Children can wear their party clothes for this and we will have party games and food.

Friday 19th December will be the last day of term and the school will be finishing half day so there will be no afternoon session in Nursery. Morning Nursery will finish as normal at 11.20am.

The children will return to school after the Christmas break on Tuesday 6th January 2015.

If you have any questions, please ask a member of Nursery staff.
