Our Learning this Week
Reception A
25th September 2015
Language, Literacy and Communication
We continued our Jolly Phonics with learning the letter sounds “p” and “i”. We played a match the picture game to hear the sounds in words. We used chalks to try and write the letter shapes. We also used paint to practice how to write our names. We read a book called “Who Sank the Boat” and we played in our lifeboat station role play area for the first time this week.
|
Mathematical Development
We played guess the hidden number on the number line and did some clapping counting as a whole class. We did some big counting by placing objects into the boat before it sank in the water.
|
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We looked at floating and sinking. We collected some natural objects from an outdoor walk and guessed whether they would be able to sink or float in the water. |
Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.
Our school value this fortnight is friendship. We talked about different ways we can show how to be friends. The children came up with hugging, smiling, thumbs up and high fives.
|
Creative Development
We learnt a song called “Big Blue Boat” and sang more familiar songs about water – Incy Wincy Spider, Five Speckled Frogs, and Five Little Ducks. We looked at some watery paintings by famous artists and had a go at painting some water themed paintings ourselves.
|
Physical Development
We practised listening to instructions and starting and stopping in the hall. We also had to move around obstacles.
Don’t forget to bring your child’s named PE kit into school for Monday afternoons – the children are getting great at changing themselves for PE…keep practising at home.
|
Welsh Language Development
We read “Tedi Twt yn Siopa” and we had a go at saying “os gwellech yn dda” (thank you) We also practised singing our Welsh songs. |
Anything else…
Take every opportunity to help your child practice writing their name – they can use pen and paper, a painting app on your phone, using chalks outdoors or even make mud paint and use a stick! Have a good weekend! |
Reception homework 18.01.16
Please can your child bring in something that is special to them. This can be a toy, a photograph, a book, etc.
We will then ask the children to talk about their special item with the rest of the class. Some of the questions they will be asked are:
- What is your special item?
- Why is it special?
- How does it make you feel?
Practise some of these questions with your child before they bring it into school.
Thanks

Welcome to Reception 2015
Welcome to Reception September 2015
Your child has officially started “big school” which is an exciting time for both you and your child; however we understand that you both may have worries about this new experience. Staff in both reception classes will support your children through every step of the new experiences, such as sitting with them during lunch time and going outside with them during playtime. .
If you have any questions about any aspect of your child settling into Reception, please talk to the class teacher.
Lunches and snack
School provides a healthy balanced lunch for just £2.20 a day. You may be entitled to free school meals – ask at the office for more information. If your child prefers sandwiches, send them in with a heathy packed lunch. We ask that you include some fruit or vegetables that your child likes and healthy drinks such as squash or water. Please don’t put any fizzy drinks in their lunch box.
We will still have a healthy snack in the morning before break. If you want your child to have some fruit please send in £1.25 for the week. If you would prefer to pay this for the half term, then it will be £8 for this half term. Children will still receive their daily milk at the end of every day during story time.
Our Topic
Our topic this term will be “Pitter Patter Puddle Play” and your children will be learning:
- About water in it’s different forms,
- How water is used in the home,
- About being safe near water,
- About wet weather, including storms,
- About animals that live in ponds of streams,
- How to use volume and measures in practical activities,
- How to record their ideas, feelings and experiences through drawing, mark-making and emergent writing,
- That water is important for seeds and plants.
Forest Schools
We are fortunate to have funding to provide Reception with a weekly experience of Forest Schools. This is an exciting opportunity for our child to have learning experiences that are unique to the outdoors.
As there are two Reception classes, Mrs. Miller’s class will go this half term and Mrs. Amirat’s class will go next half term. For more information there will be a meeting on Wednesday 9th September at 9am in the school hall.
This meeting will also be a welcome meeting for Reception.
PE
Reception will have PE on a Monday afternoon. They will have to bring shorts or jogging bottoms, t-shirt and trainers/daps. name on it. Trainers with Velcro will be easier for the younger children to remove and put back on.
Coats
Please remember to also label your child’s coat. It is hard for us to remember whose coats is whose and even though we encourage children to be independent, they can also forget which coat is theirs!

Our learning this week 17th April 2015
Language, Literacy and Communication
This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “t”. We read the story “The Tiger who came to Tea”. We sequenced pictures from the story and also wrote a shopping list for Sophie to buy all the things that the Tiger had eaten! |
Mathematical Development
We looked at ordering numbers and played a game on the interactive white board where we had to hang the t-shirts on the line in the correct order. On welly Wednesday we looked at making collections of ten – ten sticks, ten stones, ten leaves, ten daisies, etc. |
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
The Tiger from the story was a little bit muddled up and didn’t know what things we did at different times of the day, so the children needed to sort the pictures into hoops of things we do in the morning, things we do in daytime and things we do at night.
|
Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.
We talked about our teeth and what we needed to do to look after them and also what foods gave us happy teeth and which foods gave us sad teeth. We also practiced taking turns playing a brush the tooth game.
|
Creative Development
In music we tapped different parts of our bodies in time to some of our favourite songs. We noticed that some songs made us tap slowly and other songs made us tap quickly. We have enjoyed the outdoors this week and the children have got creative with the chalks outdoors, drawing rainbows, wiggly lines, faces, etc. |
Physical Development
We played a game called traffic jam where we carefully moved around the hall being different types of transport – tractor, racing car, bicycle or motorbike. When Mrs. Amirat shouted “Traffic jam”, we all had to get ourselves in one big long line. We practised our listening skills and by the end of the session we were super speedy at getting into a traffic jam! |
Welsh Language Development
. We have been practising singing some of our favourite Welsh songs this week, as well as counting all the way to 33 in Welsh because we have had so many children in Nursery this week – Daiwn! |
Anything else…
We have had such a busy first week back in school. Don’t forget, named sunhats to wear outside and put sun cream on your children before coming to Nursery. Have a good weekend. |

We will be doing lots of gardening in preparation for Swansea In Bloom and the profits made from selling the children’s Spring flower photo holders will go towards buying plants, paint and tools for our outdoor areas.

Nursery Weekly Update 27th March 2015
Our Learning this Week
Financial Fortnight & Easter
What a busy fortnight we have had in Nursery!
Financial Fortnight has given us a focus on learning about money. We have fished coins out of gloop and looked at the different colours and numbers we could see on the coins, we have sang money songs such as 5 Currant Buns, we talked about shops and what we buy from different shops, and we voted to have a Tesco in our role play area which the children have loved.
For our enterprise we decided to make some spring themed photo holders which the children worked had to paint in pretty colours and patterns. We hope you liked them and all money raised will go towards purchasing plants for our garden ready for Swansea In Bloom.
We have celebrated Easter by looking at a story about how a little girl celebrated Easter with her family, we made cute chick Easter cards and chocolate Easter nests, we sang counting songs with Easter bunnies, and we had a chocolate hunt outside.
The children’s Easter bonnets were amazing so thank you for all the effort that went into making them.
I hope you have a good two weeks school holiday with your little ones and we look forward to seeing you on Monday April 13th.
Thanks for your continued support.
Mrs. Amirat and the Nursery team.
