Nursery Weekly Update 13th February 2015
Our Learning this Week
Language, Literacy and Communication
This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “p”. We read the story “The Three Little Pigs”. Betty didn’t know the story so the children tried to recall different parts of the story for each character. We had some really good story telling words.
|
Mathematical Development
We explored ways of making 10 with two Numicon shapes to fit inside the three pigs’ house. We made patterns copying the Numicon pattern cards.
|
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We explored different materials to make large houses outside for the pigs. We collected dry grass, big and small sticks, and rocks to make the three houses.
|
Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.
We asked the children “Who did you like playing with today?” and encouraged children to tell others what and who they played with.
|
Creative Development
We painted pink pigs and made some beautiful pasta heart bracelets and necklaces for valentine’s day. We used special paper to design a new house for the pigs. When our drawing was done we chose what construction set we needed to build it. |
Physical Development
We used the balls in the hall to practise different ways of passing to each other. We rolled, threw and caught the ball. We moved our bodies to Write Dance “Pat-A-Cake”. We played a parachute game where we had to listen to our names and then swap places with a friend.
|
Welsh Language Development
We have been practising the Welsh animal song in preparation for the Eisteddfod. We read “Picnic” and learnt some new words such as brechdannau – sandwiches and sudd oren – orange juice.
|
Anything else…
Have a great half term. We look forward to hearing what you have all been up to when we see you back at school on Monday 23rd February.

|
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We explored oranges in a variety of ways.
|
Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.

Our learning this week – 29th January 2015
Language, Literacy and Communication
This week Ben and Betty have been teaching us the letter sound “n”. We read the story “Spike’s Best Nest”. We had a visit from a bird called Tweety who left us a letter to say his nest had blown away in the wind. The children wrote letters back to Tweety to say how they were going to help him.
|
Mathematical Development
We explored the Numicon shapes in lots of creative ways this week. We pressed the Numicon into playdough and we printed with the Numicon shapes. We also went number fishing and tried hard to recognise which number was on the fish. We sang “1,2,3,4,5, once I caught a fish alive” |
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We watched a video of a robin building a nest. We talked about what he had used to build a nest. We then used twigs, leaves and grass to make a new nest for Tweety. He even sent us a video message saying thank you and telling us how much he liked the nests we had made for him. Hopefully Tweety will visit us again soon.
|
Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.
We talked about how Spike was feeling in the story “Spike’s Best Nest”. He was grumpy, tired, sad and then happy, which gave us lots to talk about.
|
Creative Development
We drew a nest and some children even included eggs. We made a newspaper collage of a letter “n”. |
Physical Development
We did the “Straight, Bent, Cross, Happy” dance in Write Dance and had to make contrasting movements with our bodies to match the music.
|
Welsh Language Development
As well as our daily Welsh board, we have been practicing our Welsh numbers with lots of number rhymes. Encourage your child to count in Welsh at home. |
Anything else…

Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We had some lost animal babies who needed us to find their mummy. It was a bit tricky because the baby animal names are different to the mummy animal names and they don’t always look the same. |
Personal and Social Development, Wellbeing and Cultural Diversity.
We read Little Miss Muffett and then talked about why she was scared of the spider. The children talked about whether they would be scared or not.
|

We went outside and mixed mud paint. We then used large pieces of paper to make lots of muddy marks…lots of messy fun! We made milk bottle maracas and used them to play fast music and slow music. |
Physical Development
We had to change our body movements in time to the tambourine – fast movements for a fast tambourine and slow movements for a slow tambourine.
|

We have been very busy preparing for our Christmas concert this week. The children have been amazing and looked fantastic in their outfits so thank you for all your effort supporting your children with this.
We have been reading the Nativity story this week and playing with the Nativity characters. The children enjoyed the story and liked hearing about Baby Jesus.
Sparkle the Elf has been helping us do our best singing this week as well as getting in a tangle with our Christmas decorations!! I wonder what mischief and fun he will have for us next week?
I have a list of children’s names if you would like your child to send Christmas cards – please ask for a list if you need one.
A few reminders for next week:
Nursery will be having our Christmas party on Thursday 18th December. Children can wear their party clothes for this and we will have party games and food.

Language, Literacy & Communication
Sparkle the elf arrived in nursery this week and his special mission is to report back to Santa what all the boys and girls are doing. Sparkle the elf has been giving us a few surprises each day as he seems to be getting up to mischief every night, such as making a mess with tissue, building himself a train, drawing pictures, leaving us clues for tasks, etc. Sparkle’s antics have given the children lots of opportunities to talk and share their ideas about what he is doing. |
Mathematical Development
We have been counting lots of Christmas objects and matching then to the right number to complete our Christmas puzzle. We have had a Christmas picture hunt in the classroom, where we match the pictures we find to those on our list and tick them off. We then counted how many pictures we had found. |
Knowledge and Understanding of the World
We had a lovely day out on our school trip to Poundffald farm. It was a beautiful sunny day which made our chocolate hunt through the Christmas trees lots of fun. We saw lots of animals such as pigs, lambs and reindeer. We kept a lookout for Rudolph but he must have been busy helping Santa. |
Personal and Social Development, Well Being and Cultural Diversity
We have been reminding ourselves to do good listening in the classroom and to be kind to our friends, especially as Sparkle the Elf will be reporting back to Santa! |
Creative Development
When we discovered Sparkle had drawn a picture of Santa, the children had a go at drawing Sparkle. They looked really hard at the shapes and colours needed for his face and hat. We are doing some great singing for our show and can’t wait for you to come and watch us.
|
Physical Development
We have been listening to music on Penpals and moving our bodies in straight lines, zig-zag lines and in circles. The children have also been developing their fine motor skills by making paper chains to decorate Santa’s workshop in our classroom. |
